Business Trip to Philly

Tag: Random NonsenseBush Mackel @ 12:50 pm

On Wednesday evening of this week, I drove up to Philly because I was slated to attend some hands on training for Microsoft’s Expression Design and Expression Blend software.

If you don’t know (as I didn’t), basically Microsoft Expression Design is M$’s answer to Adobe Illustrator, and Microsoft Expression Blend is basically their answer to Adobe Flash. Now after attending the conference, I don’t think the products are currently the Adobe Killers M$ had hoped for but maybe with a little work they’ll get there.

(I’ll probably be writing more about this software in a future post so stay tuned true believers).

Other Philly Stuff
Outside of the conference, this is also the first time I can remember that I’ve had to chance to kind of check out a little bit of Philly. Unfortunately, I’m only here for another 3 hours so last night was really my only chance to get out. Me and two co-workers ended up going to this place called Continental and it was a lot of fun. It was more or less like a diner setup with outside seating and some serious food. And of course, you know what the best part about a business trip is right?

Your company picks up the tab.

And that meant the first order of business was grabbing a beer and ordering something lobster related. I ended up getting the lobster potatoes. And they were fantastic. Of course being the fatness that I am today, I had to get dessert too. The waitress ended up bringing out a platter with big shot glasses on it that were filled with (in her words) “yummy stuff”. Obviously, I had to go with the Lemon Cheesecake with Blueberries. It was awesome.

Random Weirdness
So last night while we were walking around, my co-worker Curtis noticed this one dude with two girls that looked really familiar. After a second, it donned on him who they were. I didn’t really believe him so we left our third co-worker for a second and tracked this people down so that I could get a good look. Turns out we believe we saw three of last year’s American Idol contestants, Chris Richardson, Haley Scarnato and Sanjaya’s sister. We didn’t say anything to confirm but I will say that Haley’s legs are pretty much pretty what Simon made of them on TV.

All in All
It was a good time. It’s too bad that my wife and kid aren’t here but I guess I’m glad I got the chance to come up. The “interactive” part of things at the conference isn’t bad, and from the little part of Philly that I got to see, it seems like a really diverse and chill place to be (which is very much the opposite of where I’m living now).

P.S. I’m hoping that soon I’ll be able to write some 360 posts…maybe for next week if I get myself together. I’ll “see” you all soon!

DMOZ Blackmail Scandal

Tag: Random NonsenseBush Mackel @ 7:00 am

When I first read about this on Pure Blogging, I simply couldn’t believe it.

Naturally, the first thing I did was scramble around the Internet as fast as I could to get some more information on the subject. Frankly, I was surprised that so few people were talking about it on my regular feeds.

But you know what? If you won’t talk about it, I will. Heck, that’s why I get paid the big bucks!

The Background
DMOZ was arguably considered the biggest and best directory on the net. Getting your site in there was a sure fire way to traffic and credibility. And if you didn’t know about Jeremy Schoemaker (otherwise known as ShoeMoney) well, he has one of the biggest sites and certainly one of the biggest blogs on the web. Up until recently, he was in DMOZ.

The Big Story
According to ShoeMoney, he was approached by an editor of DMOZ saying that if he didn’t pay the editor $5,000.00, his site would be removed from the directory. Long story short, he didn’t pay and he was removed.

So What?
I know for a lot of you you’re saying this so let me put it into context. There was a time not too long ago that for web developers, getting into DMOZ was essentially the holy grail. The solid foundation you built your house onto. For us bloggers who care about our rankings for sponsored reviews and advertising, it would be like Alexa coming up and saying, “Pay me a Grand or you’re back to an Alexa Rank of 3,000,000.”

Why Engineers Shouldn’t Draw Pictures

Tag: Random NonsenseBush Mackel @ 10:46 am

Everyone knows that engineers and artists are two different kinds of people. It is thought that one is logical and the other is creative.

One thing that is known for sure is that artists shouldn’t be in charge of making programs work, and engineers shouldn’t be charge of making things look good.

I came across this fact of the life the other day slaving away for my 3 bosses. I was given this by one of them.

This was the picture one of my bosses (an engineer) drew to show me what his idea about an app should look like. This was supposed to be a thermometer and a compass. All I’m sayin’ is the thing on the left doesn’t look like a thermometer.

30th Anniversary of Elvis Presley’s Death

Tag: Random NonsenseBush Mackel @ 11:00 am

Today is the 30th anniversary of the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. I don’t know what TV and Cable is doing today (if anything) to commemorate the event but I know when I was younger there would always be a marathon of all his terrible movies that my dad would always watch.

I didn’t particularly care for the movies then, and I can’t say that I care for them now but as I’ve grown older I think I’ve come to appreciate his music or moreso his voice now. (Which if I had to bet, I’d say is the more important of the two).

Now I’m sure some of that appreciation comes from my dad, and I’m sure a lot of that appreciation comes from my general distaste in music now. In the end, I think it’s too bad that kids today don’t really know anything about his music. I mean, he’s the only guy to be in the 4 different musical Halls of Fame! Could any performer today even come close to that feat?

So hey, I’m not the biggest fan but he had some great songs and it’s suspect if the world will ever seen a performer like him again. Do you have a favorite Elvis song? Suspicious Minds is my personal fav.

Branding Blog

Tag: Random NonsenseBush Mackel @ 1:12 pm

NOTE: The following is a sponsored review.

Branding Blog is a newer blog that claims to be,

“dedicated to policing brands, employees and the internet. A fun witty look at the good, bad and the ugly of branding.”

First Impressions
Upon first glance of this blog, it looks like something that would interest me. The last three posts talk about the business side of blogging (site monetization) as well as topical stories including the guy who is suing 1-800-Flowers because he believes the company is responsible for his wife finding out about his mistress! (Crazy story huh?) So that’s certainly great on the content side.

Delving Deeper
The layout of the blog is decent too…Dark text on a light background (unlike my own) gives it a very clean appearance and makes the content easy to read. The content is also written in a very digestible fashion which obviously makes everything a lot easier.

Misgivings
If there is something that I don’t like about the site it’s that I’m not really sure what it’s about. For instance, there’s no “About Page”. Every blog should have one as it helps the reader understand what the author(s) are trying to convey. And second, because I don’t really have an idea of the author(s) of the content, I’m a bit confused as to what I’m supposed to get from the site because the tone is kind of impersonal but the name of the blog is presented in a very business like way.

But again, the Branding Blog (Branding Blog) is still just getting off the ground and it could be an interesting one to watch depending on where it goes.

Is it Bush or Shoemoney!?

Tag: Random NonsenseBush Mackel @ 11:24 pm

Today is a great day. My buddy Derrik over at Flipping Rich were nice enough to give me my first free piece of blogging schwag! You should ask my wife how excited I was when she told me I had a package. Somehow I knew this was it! So thanks again Derrik, continued success over at your site, your shirt fits great and if anyone else wants me to show off their wares on this bodacious bod, just let me know!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Mob of Nerd Muggles

Tag: Random NonsenseBush Mackel @ 10:45 pm

So as I said in a post or two ago, I was guilt tripped by my wife into waiting in line to get her a copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I should first start this off by saying that I tried to read the first book and couldn’t get through it.

My wife on the other hand has read every book and listens to them on CD too. She’s a big fan. The wife has also taken me to all the movies and even while the first one was only “ok” in my eyes, the last couple have certainly been more than decent probably because of their darker tone. Why didn’t she go herself? I dunno. I’m really still trying to figure that one out. Maybe she’s just now realizing the power she has over me. Ok, enough with the back story.

I was in the middle of writing all the gory details but you know what? They’re just not that interesting. Here’s the brief recap…I went to Barnes and Nobles and there were probably about 1000 people, most of which were dressed up as wizards, demons, or some combination of the two. I took some pictures with my horrible camera phone and here they are.

The wristband the wife gave me was for #192. As I was trying to find my place in line, this rabid fan was quick to grab my hand and put me right in front of her. She was #193. In a related note, she told us that when are numbers were called (150-200), that we “HAD TO” scream as loud as we could. Of course I was only too happy to comply.
I saw this guy right before I actually purchased the book. I think he’s wondering how his plan to put on a cape, painted freckles and a red pom pom on his head didn’t land him a girlfriend…Or friends in general.
Of course, this event could not go quietly into the night. In this picture, it looks like Bill Nye the Science Guy put on a wizard’s hat and joined up with one of the forgotten czars of Russia. In Bill Nye’s defense, at least he wasn’t sporting a beard made out of cotton balls (saw like 5 of those), or engaged in a “wizard’s duel” (saw WAY too many of those too).
And that was basically my night. WAY too many people, I should’ve scalped both my wristband and another copy of the book, and worse of all. Turns out my wife gave the book to her brother, and listening to the thing on CD that she picked up from the library the next day! (I don’t remember this during my pre-marriage counseling. Curse you Catholic Church!!!)

I Haven’t Even Read the First One

Tag: Random NonsenseBush Mackel @ 12:46 am

So I just got back from the local Barnes and Nobles, getting a copy of the last Harry Potter book for my wife. Let me tell you, I haven’t seen that many rabid nerd freaks since Star Wars Episode I came out.

More to come soon.

Random Thoughts for the 4th

Tag: Random NonsenseBush Mackel @ 7:21 am

Okay kids, since I don’t have a personal personal blog (my new site doesn’t count), I don’t really have an opportunity to voice many personal thoughts. In spirit of July 4th – I’m taking the day off from tech talk and am voicing some things that would otherwise go unsaid. It’ll be quick and it won’t be pretty but it’s a holiday, so cut me a break!

  • I’m done with MySpace. I don’t wanna start with Facebook, and I’m also pretty much done with every other networking site. They take up too much of my time and while I haven’t made up my mind on this, I don’t think they really serve to forge meaningful relationships. (Kind of like text messaging w/ graphics). I’d much rather spend my time carving it up on here!
  • I have finally conceded that I’ve lost my Native glasses. If you don’t know, these are some really kicka$$ sunglasses with interchangeable lenses and flexible frames. (Oh, and did I mention they have a LIFETIME guarantee?! If you don’t lose them that is).
  • Street Fighter III is one of (if not) the BEST fighting games ever made.
  • I don’t think that most people can pull off Hawaiian shirts. Furthermore, I don’t think that 4 people should ever show up to the same party together wearing Hawaiian shirts.
  • I’m tired of my camera and really want a D-SLR.
  • Baseball sucks to watch (sorry Apex) but softball is fun to play.
  • I want to go to the UK sometime soon, and for my next vacation I want to go somewhere where hiking is not “the thing to do”.
  • I like the Age of Love because Mark Philippoussis says what’s on his mind and you can easily read his face. (I’m still a guy aren’t I?)
  • I LOVE The Shield. I’m halfway through Season 3 – It’s a great great show. I should form my own Strike Team at my office.

The end.
