YOU are the real one losing out as you purchased a faulty bit of kit and Microsoft should pay for that. In fact they should also pay for your gas, food costs, and some stress compensation for your time visiting the store to exchange their faulty piece of machinery. He may say "no problem dude, you got the mad hookups" (or words to that effect) or he may be relieved. Could be the dude would get in trouble for not having a complete system to ship back.
