iPhone SDK Revealed!

Tag: Technology/GagetryBush Mackel @ 10:00 am

It was only recently that I got to see an iPhone in action as a new co-worker of mine is apparently iPhone crazy. Gotta say,

I’m impressed.

There was a time where I was really into cell phones, but after a little bit they just became something else people could use to find me.

As time has gone on, I really wish my phone, (the LG Chocolate), had more features that could easily be used…

Which is naturally why the iPhone is starting to look very attractive to me.

Verizon = No iPhone
And I’m on Verizon so I guess you could simplify the above to Bush = No iPhone. Of course I could switch carriers but I’m on a family plan, then I’d have to buy the $300 phone blah blah blah… So until the iPhone comes to Verizon, I’m probably outta luck. And even when it does, I’d probably still have to convince the wife to let me spend $300 bucks on a cell phone. *nod*

The SDK
When I heard that the SDK was out, I thought that it’d still be cool to develop for the device even though I didn’t have an iPhone because they’d probably have an emulator built into it right? Well unfortunately I didn’t think very hard about the whole thing because I neglected to think about how much the SK would cost. $99. bleh. I think that pretty much pushes me out of the iPhone development game for the time being, especially since I DON’T HAVE AN iPHONE!

But for those of you who do, it looks like there are a ton of cool things you’d be able to accomplish using the SDK including using the iPhone’s OpenGL for 3D games, building “standard” applications helped by code they provide and I guess plethora of other things too. I didn’t look at the whole keynote on Apple’s website, but it’s pretty long and has a lot of info about the whole thing including (I THINK) the ability to download the SDK for free? I’m not exactly sure on that one.

Anyone else have any interest with the iPhone or the SDK? Better question - Anyone planning on doing any development on the iPhone recreationally or professionally?

I WANT ONE…… but can’t justify the money either. I guess I will wait until I am a milionaire so I probably won’t ever own one.

The dev app looks amazing though, should be free.

  2. Bush Mackel says:

@Forest - I think that the dev app IS free, but I haven’t had anytime to do more research on that front.

I’ve seen my friends with iPhones. I played around with one at the Apple store too. They are very cool. I love the video and the Just not something a college can afford. Hahaha. Verizon has a phone I want though (nothing to your interest though): PINK BLACKBERRY PEARL.

  4. Ivy says:

Oops, I accidentally deleted part of my sentence. I meant to say, “I love the video and the wifi capabilities”

  5. Grace says:

I’m not sure about the iPhone. I heard that it’s easy to break and everything… The Chocolate’s always a classic, even though that can be broken easily too. ;)

I’ve never touched an iPhone but I roughly know how it feels after borrowing my friend’s iPod touch for one whole day (he can’t call me to get it back because I turned off my phone, just to spend more time with his little gorgeous gadget). I know I’m selfish, haha! Well if I really wanted to get an iPhone, the price is the first thing that will throw me off, and what comes next is how “scratchable” the surface it. I hope it doesn’t get scratches all over the screen like iPods :( urgh.

If I wanted to design some applications for iPhone, the first thing I need is the phone itself! Nothing beats that :D

  7. Bush Mackel says:

@Ivy - Yeah, the iPhone is a cool little toy no doubt but the price tag does make many take a pause for the cause. And hey, who’s to say the pink blackberry pearl isn’t my style? I mean, it isn’t - But it COULD’VE been. (#);D

@Grace - I really can’t say either way. All I know is that people who have iPhones LOVE iPhones. *nod*

@teddY - It DOES seem that the cooler our little devices become, the more likely they are to be scratched too. Why can’t someone put out a scratch proof screen already?!

  8. Pete says:

Like many people I’m interested to see what the NEXT iPhone has to offer. But as it can’t sync with any of my business apps and it isn’t on my network then it’s never gonna happen for me.

  9. Bush Mackel says:

@Pete - I’m with ya there. I really hope it eventually finds itself on more carriers… Because there are a lot of people who would love to buy it. It reminds me of a situation where I literally went up to this guy who worked at a retail store and said, “I want to spend $100, please help me.” And he couldn’t do it. But more on that later today.
