I’m thinking about doing away with all sidebars in favor of a chunky, triple thickened, ultra cool footer bar…hehe:)

@Apex – It seems that footers are all the rage now (that is footers with content) but I haven’t really sat down yet and figured out what I would want in there, and what I would want (completely) in the sidebars yet. And dropdowns are something else that might be considered. Great point.

@Kyle – I meant to say, “It’s too bad this post didn’t have a big section for SINGLE sidebars…” ‘Cause I really do think yours is ace!

And yeah, you’re probably right about the “situational sidebars”. Maybe in a few releases of WordPress we’ll start seeing it built in. (#):) (Remember, you heard it here first!)

Thank you very much Bush! Though I can’t take credit, as many others have done something similar before me.

I think before to long you will see a majority of blogs and blog themes doing something along those lines. Blog sidebars are full of a lot of situational stuff which needs to be there for certain readers who will look for it, but doesn’t need to be there for others.

I am not a big fan of double column sidebars. However, if you have to do it, definitley put them on the same side.

Otherwise, I agree with Kyle and others that some stuff can be above the footer.
Also, you could reduce the size of your sidebar by doing things like making archives into a dropdown, like my blog.

@Mark – Yeah, I’m gonna do it. I just need a free hour or two to play with the css to knock it out. My new “a little bit at a time all the time” work ethic seems to be paying its dividends ’round here.

Make the leap to double bars my friend. You’ll be glad you did. I have to agree with you that Baron’s sidebar has always looked clean and held to a high standard.

I definitely prefer a single sidebar. You can always move random stuff/widgets to the footer if you need to, or wrap them up into tabs like several blogs are doing now.

Bush- 3 months of no blogging has got me into the blogging mood again. I just felt like I should stop blogging for a while and work on something else. But now I’m back.
