Why Engineers Shouldn’t Draw Pictures
Everyone knows that engineers and artists are two different kinds of people. It is thought that one is logical and the other is creative.
One thing that is known for sure is that artists shouldn’t be in charge of making programs work, and engineers shouldn’t be charge of making things look good.
I came across this fact of the life the other day slaving away for my 3 bosses. I was given this by one of them.

This was the picture one of my bosses (an engineer) drew to show me what his idea about an app should look like. This was supposed to be a thermometer and a compass. All I’m sayin’ is the thing on the left doesn’t look like a thermometer.

Your boss has a strange vision of a thermometer. Definitely Freudian haha.

It looks like something dirty a drunk guy would draw on a cocktail napkin to get his point across.

Words fail me and I’m glad Brown Baron said it first!

I won’t even say what I thought it was. (Bad Sassy, Bad Sassy), but I can’t say a word because I failed art class. My first assignment was to draw a whale, it looked more like Nemo. And after that I didn’t attempt it again.

Isn’t that thing on the right the Millennium Falcon?

Hang on, I have to quit laughing first. I’m just wondering who’s temperature you boss is going to take with that thing. LOL
That is way too funny. You might want to remove the pen from your boss’s hand. LOL

That is a great doodle. My first impression was not too far from Angela’s.
It is only a general rule though. I am mostly invloved in programing, but recently did the design for a site (http://www.mutinydesign.co.uk) and one of the best graphic designers I know is also fluent in ASP and ActionScript.

That definately looks like a thermometer. I also have one, yet my parents told me is very expensive tool and, to prevent being stolen, I keep it hidden when I`m in public places.
Today`s days, if google-ing for proper term, lot of thermometers pics and videos can be find on net, mostly durring plain action of themperature measuring ..

LOL. I simply don’t know what else to say.

I thought that thing on the right was Patrick from SpongeBob.

I’m going to be the one guy that claims the thermometer doesn’t look like a penis (oh wait I just did, didn’t I?). If you tilt the drawing to the left 90 degrees, it looks like a spoon.
A penis spoon.

LOL, I saw the picture before I got a chance to read your text, and I knew exactly where you were headed! The only thing I wasn’t able to guess was that it was supposed to be a thermometer!

@Matt – Ha ha. You weren’t the only one who couldn’t connect those dots. The hardest part about the whole thing was I already in a “I can’t take work anymore today” mood so when he drew this, all I could say to myself was just, “Did that just really happen?”

Great way of proving a point, you could look at it as one of those ink blot type things were you make your own choice at what you see. Picasso for instance makes brilliant paintings as i am told but to me they look a mess.

@WebDevPerson – Well that’s no good. (#):)
