Study of Blog Earnings Report July 2007

Tag: Blogging, Site Monetization, Web Dev/Site PromoBush Mackel @ 7:00 am

If you remember last month, I discovered Daily Burger.com’s “make money online blog list” and was inspired to make a list of my own…A study of his list that broke down the revenue totals with Alexa Rank, Page Rank and Revenue Source.

This month I went back over to Daily Burger but to my utter disappointment, there was no blog earnings list. So I decided to create my own! Apart from names and sites appearing on the list this time around, you’ll also see my lonely numbers. At the bottom of the list!

Revenue Name Alexa Rank Page Rank Revenue Source
$12,406.76 John Chow 2,513 6 Review Me/Aff Sales
$8,126.00 Everton 17,308 6 AdSense
$3,0648.08 Amy Bass 252,195 0 CashCrate
$231.87 James 99,252 4 IntelliTXT
$164.50 Derrich 140,656 5 Pay Per Post
$67.92 Matt Huggins 109,640 3 AdSense
$24.74 Bush Mackel 178,103 1 Review/Me
$0.00 Chuck 1,361,815 0 N/A

If anyone is interested, here’s how my earnings shook out:

  1. $20.00 - ReviewMe Posts
  2. $4.74 - Google AdSense

This next month I’m sure my AdSense revenues are going to go up, (because 4 weeks is better than 2) but I think that’s the best I can hope for right now. (#):) Until my AR and PR picks up (where’s the update!?), I just don’t see a big increase in sponsored review profits coming. But we’ll see.

Anyone else care to share? If you are so nice to post your earnings and the rest, I’ll go ahead and update this post w/ your information!

I post my earnings on the first or second of every month. Feel free to include me in your list.

This Sunday when I do a recap of the week I will have results from something that happened this week. Related to traffic and making money.

  2. Glen Allsopp says:

Nice list, i always like seeing what others are earning

  3. Bush Mackel says:

@BeachBum - I’ll check back on your site then! Thanks for becoming apart of the MADNESS!

@Glen - Me too, keeps me motivated. (#):)

  4. Glen Allsopp says:

For me its not necessarily that It keeps me motivated to continue blogging but it certainly allows me to see what type of goals are realistic and that I’m not wasting my time ;). As I’m sure is the same for others.

  5. Bush Mackel says:

@Glen - Ha ha. I like you put that. For me, (as I’ve said it before), making money from this thing is more a game than anything else. And as I’m such the competitor, I love to rank myself against other people. Currently, I’m at a good place since I have nowhere to go but up!

  6. Chuck says:

    This one’s easy for me ; )

    None, 0, nothing, zilch…

…for now. Actually, I’m just interested in building relationships and making friends. In time, I might add ads to the site, but I’ve got too much going on and too little traffic to monetize it anyway.

  7. Derrich says:

Thanks for the mention, Bush. July was an off month for me, but I’ll be back up for August. Now, if only I can figure out how to catch up to Chow and Blair.

  8. Madhur Kapoor says:

I will also start sharing my earnings from this month .

  9. Brown Baron says:

Your numbers will probably triple for this month buddy. Did I just hear pr update? Geez, that thing is taking way too long haha.

  10. Bush Mackel says:

@Chuck - Thanks for sharing! As you can see, I’ve updated the post with your stats! HA HA! I know what you’re sayin’, “Bush - I thought we were BOYS!?” But I only do this to give you a snapshot. Everyone knows I can’t stop raving about your website and I know soon you’re gonna look back at this either from a financial or traffic standpoint and just say, “I remember the good ol’ days!” (#);)

@Derrich - Off month huh? Well I can’t wait to see you amp it up for this post in Sept! And catching up to Chow and Blair? Ha ha. You and me both. (#):)

@Madhur - I’ll be keepin an eye on your feed then. *nod*

@Brown - You’re tellin me. But you know, it’s funny. Even though I think the the PR boost is going to help a bunch with attracting advertisers, I don’t think it’s going to do much for AdSense and not as much as I want for Review/Me and the like. It seems that at least for PPP there’s < PR 6 AR 9999 and then everything better.

  11. Brown Baron says:

Ahh but then you haven’t implemented your eBook for subscribers right? That should bring in traffic too.

  12. Bush Mackel says:

@Brown - That’s still in the works! I’m waiting to hear back from an advertiser right now but once I do, I think I’m going to finally start my new contest and some other things, that included. *nod* Thanks for the reminder though, these days my mind is going a miles a minute. (#):D

  13. Nirmal says:

Nowadays its the trend to share your earnings. I’ll also do a comparative display of my earnings.

  14. Chuck says:

I just laughed at loud that you added me to the stats. I love it!

  15. Opal Tribble says:

I only did one paid post for July $45. I could have done a lot more but I didn’t want to do them.

    One Paid Post $45
    Let’s see Affiliate’s $350
    Google Adsense $55
    Total = $450

My Alexa is 67,942 and my Google PR is 4.

The great thing about most of the money is the $350 was made when I was on vacation. I didn’t do a thing, lol. I didn’t have to do write or fill out anything. I have a feeling, in time, the amount I make from affiliates, adsense, and advertisers will take off.

Two advertisers contacted me within the past few days. The CEO of one of the paid for posts I did contacted me directly. They really liked my review. I emailed her and extended the offer for ad placement. There are a few other advertisers that I’ll be contacting within the next few weeks.

An online magazine contacted me this past Sunday although it’s not money I will be placed in their directory it’s by invitation only the magazine is established, lots of activity, it’s a good thing. I’ll be able to meet a lot of new people. I’m excited.

I made a lot of changes recently.

  16. Bush Mackel says:

    @Nirmal - Can’t wait to see it!

    @Chuck - I aim to please. (#):)

@Opal - Woah! You’re comin’ on strong this month! You gotta let me know what “Affiliate” means though, is that Affiliate sales? Or more like Direct Sponsorship for your site?

And btw, I checked out that mag when you wrote that on your site. Looks legit. Nice work!

  17. Kyle Eslick says:

I would like to have you place me next to John Chow’s earnings, but alas I wasn’t that close!

I don’t disclose figures, but I am somewhere between James and Derrich.

Hang in there, Adsense will pick up. Remember to target search engine traffic, not your regular readers.

  18. GnomeyNewt says:

Great post. Money seems to be so taboo among other types of websites, but blogging is very open and I’m happy about that too. Seems we can read about others experiences and learn. I’m at 0 too :c), haven’t tried yet to make any money. Going to check up on all these blogs to learn some new tricks!

  19. Aaron Cook dot Comâ„¢ says:

Great post Bush. Here’s to continued and ever-increasing earnings! :)

    Shine on,
    Aaron

  20. Bush Mackel says:

@Kyle - Congrats and thanks for the encouraging words!

@Gnomey - Make sure you ask around, ppl are willing to help.

    @Aaron - HERE HERE! (#):D

  21. Mike says:

I’ve made about $126 in the last four or five days on Sponsored Reviews. Whee ;P

  22. Bush Mackel says:

@Mike - I can’t even get one Sponsored Review and you’re getting 4 or 5!?!? Hey Mike, can you make me a cute little character for MY site? (#);D

  23. Mike says:

Haha…once I had them update my blog rankings that made a huge difference ;P Having 4/5 stars for a blog ranking is a whole lot more attractive to advertisers than a 2/5 apparently :P

  24. Opal Tribble says:

Bush that would be affiliate sales. It can be very lucrative. I mentioned before that I’m looking for other things besides adsense and sponsored reviews. Adsense doesn’t pay enough for me right now I need a lot more traffic and paid posts well you got to sit and write a review.

I left a 9-5 to avoid doing stuff like that. Many opportunities I don’t like. I was just lucky that I found four in the past five days that I really liked. I bid on them and received them. This month was the most I’ve written in a while. I wrote four, and I did three already.

I might open up another spot on my website to another advertiser, but I highly doubt that if I do they really have to be offering a good incentive to my readers just as my first advertiser did. My readers get $5 off their total order.

The advertiser on my site now approached me in the contract I wrote yesterday I told them they would pay me six months in advance. was pay me in advance. I gave them options for one month, three months, and six months the higher the time on my site they better I made the deal they went for six months. I didn’t offer them a year because I might want to do something with that spot when February 2008 rolls around. :-)

They liked the contract and told me they would have my money by the end of the day. As you already know when you deal directly with the advertiser, you eliminate the middle man.

I received all the money for that ad placement. I didn’t have to split anything. When I woke up it was sitting in my PayPal account. This week I made $614. $440 for affiliate marketing and direct advertising, $150 for paid posts, and $24 for Google Adsense.

I don’t need to wait to get a high amount of traffic to make money I can do that right now which I guess is why I’m not really looking at the pro bloggers exclusively to pattern myself after.

I look at people that are similar in traffic to myself and do some of the things they are doing. One of my blog pals makes over 3k per month (she has less traffic) and she doesn’t write any reviews. Another one made six figures last year. He was making in less than 40k about five years ago.

Again he doesn’t write reviews. He does not blog about how to make money. He’s an affiliate marketer. In real life, I have a buddy that does well with affiliate marketing on his website he made over six figures also.

He’s been doing that for at least five years. I never paid attention to it before until I thought about making some “pocket change” from my personal websites. People like that I can relate to since I can definitely do what they are doing right now and start to see results fairly quickly.

I wouldn’t be surprised if some of your highest paid bloggers don’t even talk about it. Neither of the ones I mentioned does, but I’m very observant, picked up on things that they briefly mentioned, and emailed them. You would never guess how much they are making by visiting their websites because they don’t talk about it. ;-)

I suspect they don’t talk about it because they don’t want to deal with the people coming to their site or constantly emailing them on how can they make money online. ;-)

I actually like that approach. I don’t think people would believe I’ve made anything on my website unless I write about it, lol and I shall slow down on that and just talk about it with my friends because I don’t want to think I’m bragging and I don’t want to turn my regular readers off by constantly talking about monetizing my website. I have a lot of readers and lurkers who could care less about that type of stuff, but quite a few have purchased some of my affiliate items. :-)

Regarding the magazine, It’s legit I don’t get carried away about something unless I go over it thoroughly. ☺

[...] has done his research and provides us a little insights on his blog earnings last month, along with a few other bloggers. I like this idea, can’t wait to see next months [...]

  26. Bush Mackel says:

@Mike - Yeah man, thanks for the input.

@Opal - Sorry this is so late, but just wanted to say thanks for the very descriptive insight. Always taking the time to help readers is really becoming your hallmark and I’m sure everyone appreciates it.

    August 2007 goal update…

It’s once again time for my goal project update. August was a bona fide ball tearer for swollenpickles.com in terms of both revenue and traffic. I also edged closer to achieving a couple of my other goals.
    1. Develop Swollen Pickles into a webs…

  28. Bush Mackel says:

@S. Pickles - Thanks for the heads up. You’ll definitely be included in this month’s blog earnings!
