Metal Gear Solid 4 – Finally a Game to Get Excited For!

If you’re like me, (or any other video game fan out there), you’ve been looking for a reason to buy a PS3. So far it’s been a bit of a hard sell given its $600 price tag, the lowered price of high definition dvd players, and most of all – Its lack of a game library.

All that has changed in the last couple of days with the release of a gameplay video for the highly anticipated Metal Gear Solid 4 by Konami.

The Skinny on Metal Gear Solid

If you’ve never played Metal Gear, you take control of this guy Snake and basically weave him through intricate stories involving these things called Metal Gears. Metal Gears (if I have this straight) are essentially walking tanks that can fire nuclear weapons.

Now apart from the story and cutscenes, (which have always been the best you will find in the whole of gamedom), the gameplay has always been something special. As a player, you can basically play through the game trying to use stealth to avoid detection or you can go the other way and just shoot up everyone and everything in your path.

You will have to use every trick in Snake’s arsenal including shooting and tranqing bad guys, holding them up, dragging them away, hiding in lockers, hiding in cardboard boxes and basically using every bit of sneakery you can get away with.

Now I don’t feel like I’m really doing the series justice, but believe me when I say it’s one of the most revered franchises ever and has positioned its creator Hideo Kojima as arguably the greatest game designer ever.

Fast Forward to Metal Gear Solid 4
Basically take everything from the previous Metal Gears and amp it way up! Graphics are way up, sound is way up! *drool* Look, I’m not going to waste anymore of your time listening to me. Here’s the infamous gameplay video that EVERYONE is talking about. Tell me you don’t think this game is crazy!? (BTW, if you can – Look at it when hooked up to a proper sound system, it’ll sound NUTS!)

  1. Chuck says:

That was fun to watch–thanks Bush!

  2. Rhys says:

    It does look amazing.

I loved MGS2, even if you had to play as Raiden :S, and this is the continuation from it. The cliffhanger ending nearly killed me, and took me AGES to work out exactly what was said in the last half hour of dialogue, gameplay.

I am waiting for it for the X360 though :)

  3. Opal: Vegan Momma says:

That looks really good but I’m still not sold on the PS3, lol. ;-)

  4. Bush Mackel says:

@Chuck – No problem! Brad over at dothejustice.com actually fwd’d it to me!

@Rhys – Now I THINK that was MGS3 and I completely know what you’re talking about. I didn’t try to figure it out. “Sons of patriots this, and blah blah blah that” it was just too much.

***EDIT*** You’re right and I’m wrong on the MGS2 front Rhys!

And for the 360? Is it supposed to come out for the 360? As far as I know, MGS has only been on Sony platforms. You might be outta luck there. (#)<:(

@Opal – Well, I’m not “sold” on it either, but being the video game loser I am, I just need ONE reason to get the system. Before high def dvd players dropped I had one. Now, I’ve found an even better reason. (#):) PLUS, there are rumors that the 360 is going to drop it’s price by $50-$100 sometime in early August so….I don’t even know…

  5. Bush Mackel says:

    +1

@Everyone – BTW, isn’t that a kicka$$ picture up above of Snake? I found it on a site and linked to it so everyone can check out all the wicked pictures on there!

  6. Rhys says:

Maybe. MGS2 came out for the Xbox under the guise “Substance” but MGS3 wasn’t.

Who knows. I really don’t want to buy a PS3 just to play it.

  7. Bush Mackel says:

    @Rhys – I don’t either

    …but I will. (#):)

  8. Madhur Kapoor says:

The video is awesome buddy . I hope they release it for the PC too because i cant afford a PS3 for this game .

  9. Jesse says:

    Here’s my gripe.

My cousin is a MGS fanboy and it’s all I hear about. I know the games are good. I know this game is going to be a best-seller. But I decided to check it out anyways, to see if it looked overly-promising.

Here’s my problem with what I saw. Implement a physics engine! Please! Yes, the game looks great. Yes, the game is going to be a success. But, wow, it’s almost 2008. Everything is in this game is motion-captured and that’s not necessarily a problem, but for killing-blows it is. I saw an enemy get shot from behind… and fall, dead, on his BACK. C’mon! I would expect to see something like this back in 2002. Earlier? I don’t know.

I brought it up to my cousin and (fanboy aside) he agreed. We both hope it was glitch. Or something they’ll fix. I doubt they will, though.

  10. Bush Mackel says:

@Jesse – That’s a very interesting comment Jesse. *nod* And I gotta agree with you. Wow. I’m surprised no one else has ever said that! (that I’ve noticed) But honestly, (and as weird as it may seem), I’ll gladly take the 99% of the good things the game does over this minor oversight. (The guy wasn’t shot with a tranq dart was he?)

  11. car news guy says:

I guess I’m on the other side of the coin, I’m just looking for an excuse to buy an Xbox 360. Halo 3 looks like it’s going to be that excuse! :P The only thing I’m worried about, is that more time playing video games means less time working on my sites.
I like you theme here by the way. Think what you’re doing with the adsense blocks is cool. Interested to see how it goes.

  12. Bush Mackel says:

@Car News Guy – It’s funny you mention that because I want a 360 too! The only problem is that they’ve seemingly done nothing to address their overheating problems. But I think I may pick it up next price break (hopefully in August) and just get a cooler.

And thanks for the words about AdSense. It’s certainly a work in progress, but I’ll keep everyone updated. Keep an eye out for a post in the next day or so.
