Is Digg True To Itself?
I just read a post over at Coopreme about Digg seemingly burying stories relating to Scientology. I’m not going to go into all the details covered at the site, so just head over to Coopreme and check it out when you get a second. It basically says that he got a story dug onto the first page with over 2000 posts, but was then quickly buried. But that got me to thinking about whether or not,
Digg was not living up to what it says it is.
On Digg’s website, they say that “Digg is a user driven social content website. Ok, so what the heck does that mean? Well, everything on Digg is submitted by our community (that would be you). After you submit content, other people read your submission and Digg what they like best. If your story rocks and receives enough Diggs, it is promoted to the front page for the millions of visitors to see.”
Well apart from this whole Scientology thing, the biggest news I can remember hearing about Digg was the whole HD-DVD debacle, and them trying to bury all stories relating to the key with that because they were under pressure from HD-DVD makers or whatever. As everyone knows, Digg bowed down to the power of their community and eventually put those stories back up with a letter from Digg saying basically, “Well you wanted them up, *sigh* so here you go. *sigh* At least we had a good run. *sigh*” Needless to say, it wasn’t really a fist pumping moment for fans of Digg.
Digg provides a great way for people to share interesting stuff with others on the net in a true community fashion. At it’s core, it’s really a beautiful idea, and for Digg to not see that and seemingly blow like a shaking leaf in the wind is really disappointing. Now I don’t know if the Scientology thing is true, but even with just the HD-DVD thing, it’s a sad thing.
Now time to Digg this story!
